This weekend we travel around 3.5 hours eastward, via the A40, M25 and A12, to Colchester United's JobServe Community Stadium. Currently managed by Danny Cowley, they sit 17th in League Two - 1 point and 5 places above us. With 13 goals scored, they have scored 1 less than us, but conceded 4 fewer with 15. Samson Tovide, Lyle Taylor and Ben Goodliffe are their top scorers, with 3 goals each. Jack Payne has 4 assists, with Tovide setting up 3 as well.
The U's narrowly avoided relegation from League 2 last season, finishing 22nd. Strangely, despite having a long Football League history (especially compared to ours), they have never won a League division, finishing as runners-up on 2 occasions, and winning the Third Division play-offs just once, in 1998. They also achieved promotion from the fourth tier on 3 other occasions, between 1966 and 1977.
Players of note:
Samson Tovide - 20yo Colchester youth product, seems to be their most effective player so far this season with those 3 goals and 3 assists.
Lyle Taylor - 34yo striker who has done the rounds, from Bournemouth to Partick, from non-league to the Championship.
Recent results: (all League Two)
CTFC 1-0 CUFC, 24 Apr 21
CUFC 0-0 CTFC, 29 Dec 20
CUFC 0-2 CTFC, 29 Feb 20
CTFC 1-1 CUFC, 23 Nov 19
CUFC 3-0 CTFC, 09 Feb 19
CTFC 1-3 CUFC, 01 Sep 18
Overall: Won 7, lost 8, drawn 4. 27 goals for, 31 against.
Interesting things:
- Colchester have failed to score against us in the previous 3 meetings.
- Chris Hussey's free kick in our 2-0 win at Colchester just before Covid struck in 2020 is, I'm sure, one the very best any of us has seen scored for CTFC.
- Players to have appeared for both clubs include, once again Harry Pell. Can anybody think of another?

Can't think of any that haven't been said.
That Hussey goal was top 3 goals i've witnessed and we had a perfect view in the away end.
His free-kick away at Mansfield, 4-2 away loss to Mansfield, was also quality if anyone remembers???
When May scored I remember everyone being unsure if May was onside and then whether it had found its way in. Good day out overall!

Benjamin “Ben” Speedie takes charge of his first Town game of the season. Last year he officiated three of our fixtures, all of which were pretty notable for different reasons.
Reading 1-0 CTFC
Bolton 1-0 CTFC
Burton 1-2 CTFC
At Reading, he decided that rugby-tackling Rob Street clean through on goal in injury time was perfectly acceptable.
At Bolton he apologised to Darrell Clarke, according to the latter, for disallowing a perfectly good George Lloyd goal.
At Burton he partially redeemed himself giving us virtually every 50/50 decision in the win that saw us take the relegation fight into the final games.
Will be interesting to see which side of him turns up on Saturday - our nemesis or our guardian angel.

Thought I immediately recognised the name! He was definitely influenced by his previous two s#!t-shows when it came to that Burton performance. That George Lloyd goal ruled out was an absolute disgrace, probably 3 yards onside from memory. So blatant that the ref should have even realised, if the ref didn't. It wasn't the only howler in that game, either. I think that was in the middle of about 4 or 5 games we had where it felt like refs had it in for us, with Lloyd being denied stonewall penalties for being kicked in the nuts, etc.
